It is important to note and mention that the children would have been misguided into believing such stereotype which would be prejudicial in their subsequent years. This is to say that such pupils would have been misled by being exposed to reading such material while on the hand, it would have been banned and the damage controlled even before it takes effect. Motivation and the Brain Eating Healthy Essay Eating right is essential for positive motivation and clear thinking. The brain, specifically the hypothalamus, along with the cerebral hemisphere works closely with physiological stimulation. This includes all five of our senses, specifically speaking, taste. Explaining the brain function associated with eating, I will discuss the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, which will include heredity and involving the environment. In addition I will discuss the motivation need to succeed in eating healthy. The main function of the hypothalamus is homeostasis, or maintaining the bodys state in which it works. Factors such as blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance, and body weight are held to a precise value called the set-point. The Hypothalamus organizes and controls many complex emotions, feelings and moods, as well as all motivational states including hunger, appetite and food intake, and everything to do with the concept of pleasure including satisfaction, comfort and creative activities (Incredible Horizons, 2009). It appears that almost everything the Hypothalamus does is related in some way to weight management and controlled weight loss. When the Hypothalamus is not working properly, food becomes more important, but increasingly more unfulfilling. We end up never feeling satisfied with the foods which we have eaten, gradually eating more and more to try to compensate for whatever is lacking. From a metabolism point of view, the Hypothalamus not only governs the motivation to eat, but most importantly how eating is to be experienced, if it is satisfying or not, and how deep the satisfaction occurs. This gives an idea just how important a healthy hypothalamic function really is (Incredible Horizons, 2009). Understanding how the hypothalamus works and keeping it healthy could be an extrinsic motivational factor to eat healthy. Being educated on how food affects the brain but also the body as a whole would be an example of extrinsic motivation. However, it is how we learn to eat, hereditarily speaking that gives us the tools to start out eating healthy from a young age or not. Lifelong food preference tends to start to develop while a baby is still in the mother’s womb. The strongest pattern for future food preferences is formed during the age of 9 to 19 months of age (Vera, 2009). At this time, everything connected with food intake leaves a strong imprint on the child’s brain. Also, the baby is tasting everything with his or her mouth; toys, shoes, body parts, etc. Concurrently, the child is memorizing the experiences of his mother and fathers eating habits; what they are eating, what they are feeding the baby, their emotional reaction to the baby’s consumption of these foods all while the unsuspecting parents believe that the child does not comprehend much of what is going on. The reality is the child is forming food habits for a lifetime. Whatever the first tastes, textures, smells an sights of food are, that child will crave them for the rest of his or her life, especially in moments of distress. Because of this, it would appear that comfort food is not too far from the truth. This was often a time in a child’s life when their mom or dad focused much love and caring on them and purely through association finds its way into our adult lives when we feel emotionally distressed or needing comfort. Human behavior patterns forming in childhood are crucially important for parents to pay close attention to the eating habits they are helping their children form (Vera, 2009). Promoting healthy eating habits with special care introducing fresh fruits and vegetables to their children as much as possible; in addition, parents must keep this promotion up otherwise children will fall prey to the society’s image of food which is unhealthy; another extrinsic example. In today’s society negative eating habits are advertised in every corner. According to Not Alone website, the top ten lists of popular food most people eat on a regular basis may not appear too alarming: a burger meal, Pizza, Spaghetti, or even a hot dog meal. However, after reviewing the nutritional analysis it should be alarming! For example, a burger meal contains 1300 calories, 34 grams of protein, 189 grams of carbohydrates and 44 grams of fat. This is equivalent to 38 teaspoons of sugar and a half of a stick of butter (McKeith, Ph. D. , 2005). The normal daily calorie intake should be 2,550 for men and 1,940 for women (McKeith, Ph. D. , 2005). Unfortunately the typically daily intake for both men and women are on average 3, 877 calories. Knowing these statistics should lead a person to use internal motivation to recognize the severity of the issue and begin to eat healthy. To conclude, eating right is essential for positive motivation and clear thinking. Love In Today's Society A key to understanding Sociology and the Social Sciences in general is to evaluate subjects through time and compare and contrast characteristics that have changed and those that have remained the same. For this assignment I have elected to access three sources dealing with love; in three distinct time periods in the modern era. First we will survey one of the first popular mediums for the expression of love; that of poetry. I have chosen a poem by W.H. Auden to represent the early portion of this century- specifically the 1930s and 1940s. I knew I had to include a song from my idol Jim Morrison. Not only is he the perfect voice of the volatile sex revolution of the 1960s and 1970s; his work captures the profile of a rock star who undoubtedly acquired his domineering attitude from the endless worship of submissive women. Lastly we enter the modern era with a article from my favorite magazine Men's Health on the mistakes a man must avoid in order to please his lover. As we shall see, the increased freedom is very interesting in our first representation to the last. My goal is to show how love has changed. I hope to show what is accepted in our society today, compared with only several decades ago. Application My sources run the gamut of ideas in the subject of love. I think Auden's poem is the best representation of what has been termed â€Å"courtly love.† This seems logical, since this Romantic Era type of love was a pre-cursor to what we know as modern love. The author takes the troubadour role in his crooning style of praising his love's qualities. He idealizes his mate and is satisfied just being in the same room as she. There are not any ulterior motives evident. Auden would be categorized as a â€Å"heavenly lover,† in that his love is more lofty and sacred. There is definite contrast to this idealism though. In his last lines the author, without reservation tells of his sorrow at his loss of her to another. Morrison's Love Her Madly could almost be interpreted as a form of limerance. He has this extreme fondness for his subject: â€Å"Don't ya love her madly?† Anyone who knows the story of Jim Morrison knows that the topic of love and all that comes with it was an integral facet of his being. He is a good example of love in the context of a super-star entertainer. Morrison's songs, and most others found... ...an work their difficulties out before they explode. Conclusion It is definitely true that attitudes on love have changed in the last decade. Social structures and norms have fluctuated and have influenced people's decisions in their own lives as well as their perceptions of others. Many people would rather return to the innocent times of Auden where love seemingly was true and carried no strings. There does seem to be a problem with the increased fragmentation of society in regards to finding love today. Gone are the days when you married your high school sweet-heart and lived happily ever after. Increased mobility and the ease of travel has left love more available and open. People need more help today from outside services like dating hotlines and the help of marriage counselors and physchologists to sort out their troubles. It follows though that society is more complex and therefore better. Women have more rights and more say in society. There is no doubt that females were exploited more in the past than today. While society's attitudes have changed over the years and will continue to change, one thing remains the same: love is a driving force in our lives.

How did the Nazis use conditions of the time to establish popularity? Essay

The rise of the Nazi which began in January 1933 and eventually took over Germany still amazes many. Some historians relate this to the rise of Hitler, who was able to mobilize many people through his lies and alluring speeches, others speak of the god of the Nazi propaganda who was able to capture the German society, but still this does not give a total explanation of how the Nazi were eventually able to capture the German political customs. This is why William Sheridan Allen in his book, The Nazi Seizure of Power, uses Thalburg, a town in Germany, to elaborate what happened politically at the local level, which led to such a hasty rise and turn around of events.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   To Allen, Thalburg offered such an ideal place for the Nazi owing to its passive involvement in politics. It was a local town and the population did not understand the intentions of the Nazi. While the Nazi were busy organizing themselves at the local level of the town, the Social Democratic Party was unable to form a stand on the issue and the rest of the population did not understand what the Nazi intended to achieve; all these taking place amidst a harsh political and economic depression.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Thalburg, political activities were mainly speechmaking. The Nazi held their rallies in the Cattle Auction Hall. The rallies presented various ideas which were intended to show the rest of the people that the Nazi believed in the ideas they preached. They were young, dedicated and patriotic to their ideas. In the elections of 1930, the Nazi held more rallies and the halls were often full. They managed to attract new 800 voters to their party and stole 1000 votes from other parties. This increased their popularity and ushered in a new face of their campaign efforts.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Social Democratic Party on the other hand, had powers to do what the Nazi were doing. They held rallies in a much bigger hall, but what they failed to do according to Allen is that, they failed to recognize the Nazi as a political threat since it was based at the local level. Also, they lacked a stand as to whether they were reformers or adherers to the status quo, which they needed in order to attract the middle class voters. They failed to realize that by trying to beat the Nazi at their own game, they scared the people away.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Many people blamed the SDP of not being radical enough; hence they opted for the Nazi. The SDP therefore lost by trying to oppose rather than coming up with more sensible ideologies that would counter the Nazi. During the presidential elections in 1932, the Nazi’s popularity rose further. They rented out the hall for eight running days, held very successful rallies and their campaigns totally destroyed any opponents of Hitler. According to Allen, â€Å"This was an example of Nazi agitation and organizational ability at its best.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The German people were oblivious to the intentions of the Nazi. What they expected when they voted for Nazi, was change. They had no idea that they would legitimately bring to power a man who would later lead to the largest war in history, and a genocide of six million people and affect the economy of the world. They voted for peace although they had no idea of the kind of change that was forthcoming. Therefore the Nazis were able to rise into power swiftly amidst a nation that was trying to stabilize from a brutal war.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   According to an article http://www.flowofhistory.com/units/etc/20/FC134, Adolph Hitler was born 1889, in Australia. He served the German army with merit and enjoyed the war and the solidarity of the army. He served as a reservist after the war, spying on other political parties to ensure that they did not add more chaos to the already concluded war. One such party was the National Socialist or the Nazi. It fascinated Hitler due to its racism ideas, which he soon joined. He had a talent in speech making which attracted more crowds to the Nazi gatherings.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Even though the war was over,Germany was still unstable. There were political struggles as well. A major problem occurred especially when they printed huge sums of money to support a strike against French troops. When they failed to account for the money, a series of inflations were inevitable. The Germans felt let down by a few inferiors and this gave room for the rise of the Nazi in the early 1920s, prompting Hitler to overthrow the government in 1923. It earned Hitler a good deal of publicity as a national hero defending German honor against domestic hostility and foreign embarrassment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The higher tariffs that came as a result of the war raised international tension and Hitler used this as a tool for the Nazi to gain popularity. The war had also created an unstable economy that largely depended on financial support from the United States. The stock market dragged Germany down and many Germans were unemployed. This played right into Hitler’s hands. Through the democratic process, he would gain power.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Nazi took advantage of these factors. The Brown shirts, the Nazi thugs, started riots with opposing groups especially the Communists, but instead blamed the Communists for the instability and riots. This embarrassed the government for failing to maintain law and order, at the same time portraying the Nazi as the perpetrators of peace and order. They also gave out free food and made festivities to show that they were nice concerned Germans who held huge rallies to demonstrate their popularity and to obtain support from many more Germans.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1932, Hitler became the prime minister. He used his political power, propaganda and lies to divide his opponent parties, destroying them one by one. He then called for new elections, hoping to win more seats for the Nazi. In order to scare people further into supporting the Nazi, they burned down the parliament and blamed the Communists for it. Hitler therefore was able to suspend civil rights and arrest the Communist leaders.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   He eventually eliminated the government as well as the democratic process, and instead established the Enabling Act, which gave him power for four years, which was plenty time to gain power in Germany. With the brown shirts threatening the crowds, the law was passed and henceforth Hitler’s dictatorship was evident. He was able to disband all his political rivals and through dictatorship, it was impossible to legally accuse the Nazi of injustices.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   On the contrary, it is bizarre how a small party, despite its ingenuity could manage to convince the majority vote, in a conservative manner, when a nation was trying to recover from economic and political upheavals. There was also the inability to discover the Nazi threat and stop it from electoral dominance. Maybe it was possible in Thalburg, due to its inability to conceptualize the problem correctly. As much as the SDP was not powerful at the local level, still it had power nationally and should have maximized its power to identify the threat that lay ahead, because it is the abuse of power rather than the electoral victory at Thalburg that managed to seal the fate of Germany. But according to Allen, local factors played a major role in creating a dictatorial government in Germany. Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In a democratic regime, it is quite hard to separate the sovereign variables that lead to victory in elections. This is even worse when most of the parties use the same tactics in their campaigns. Allen does not answer the question how or why German elected Hitler and not someone else. However, he elaborates how vigorous local level politics can contribute to adverse effects in a given nation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There could be a number of reasons why Germany went along with the madness of that period. Hitler was sly and could easily win the people’s confidence using tempting promises. This way he was able to counter all his opponents at the face of the people. He used propaganda to make people believe that they were absolutely under no threat at that time. This deceived the people of the truth, until much later when it was already too late to save the situation they had gotten themselves into. Finally, Hitler’s approach temporarily restored a bit of national pride, relieving some misery, but in return the people had to pay a huge price for this temporary bit of comfort. Still, as Allen would put it, we should not just watch the steps of one mad man, rather the delusions we take to the polls ourselves when exercising the right to choose our leadership. Relationship Between Civil Rights Movement & Feminist Agenda

In this Essay I will examine relationship between Civil Rights Movement and how the feminist agenda of second wave feminism. Furthermore, I will explain how women shaped the Civil Rights Movement, and also how they redefined their own feminism because of the ways in which they interacted with the movement. In 1952, the separate but equal laws were once again challenged in the case of Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. The case was based on the segregation of educational facilities. The NAACP changed their focus from integrating higher educational facilities to integrated grade schools. After the change, the NAACP stepped in on this case and argued that segregated educational facilities were unequal, degrading to black students, and violated the fourteenth amendment's guarantee for equal protection. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were inherently unequal and did violate the fourteenth amendment. The decision of Plessy vs. Ferguson had finally been overturned and public schools were to be integrated. Brown vs. the Board of Education was a victory for the blacks, however southern whites reacted to the court's decision with extreme racism. There were two major reasons for the civil rights movement one was Impact of WWII and Brown vs. Board of Education. Females played great role in Civil rights movement. One sit-in involved Anne Moody the author of Coming of Age in Mississippi. During this sit-in, whites at the lunch counter attacked Anne Moody and other activist, but they didn't give up until they were escorted out by the police. This is what happened on the evening of December l, 1955: Parks took the bus because she was feeling particularly tired after a long day at work. She was sitting in the middle section, glad to be off her feet at last, when a white man boarded the bus and demanded that her row be cleared because the white section was full. The others in the row obediently moved to the back of the bus, but Parks just didn't feel like standing for the rest of the journey, and she quietly refused to move. At this, the white bus driver threatened to call the police unless Parks gave her up her seat, but she refused to give up her seat and bus driver called the police and they arrested her. So this respectable, middle-aged woman was taken to the police station, where she was fingerprinted and jailed. She was allowed to make one phone call. She called a NAACP lawyer, who arranged for her to be released on bail. Word of Parks's arrest spread quickly, and the Women's Political Council decided to protest her treatment by organizing a boycott of the buses. Women designed bus boycott. Jo Ann Robinson who was College Professor who talked to her friend who was attorney to help Mrs. Parks and also he helped to spread the news of bus boycott. The boycott was set for December 5, the day of Parks's trial, but Martin Luther King, Jr. nd other prominent members of Montgomery's black community realized that here was a chance to take a firm stand on segregation. As a result, the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed to organize a boycott that would continue until the bus segregation laws were changed. Leaflets were distributed telling people not to ride the buses, and other forms of transport were laid on. The boycott lasted 382 days, causing the Bus Company to lose a vast amount of money. Everyone played and tried their best to keep up with the boycott. They walked to work etc. One day this old lady who looked very tired and this white men saw her and offered her to ride in his car, she responded â€Å"my feets is tired, but my soul is rested† Meanwhile, Parks was fined for failing to obey a city ordinance, but on the advice of her lawyers she refused to pay the fine so that they could challenge the segregation law in court. The following year, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled the Montgomery segregation law illegal, and the boycott was at last called off. Yet Parks had started far more than a bus boycott. Other cities followed Montgomery's example and were protesting their segregation laws. Also they did other acts such as The March on Washington, Martin Luther King's speech. Mean reason they had many organiztion which were orgainized very well such as NAACP, SNCC, and also their success was because Non violent direct confrontation. They knew the consequences breaking the rules but they desire and wants were much more stronger. Second wave of feminism they want a right too This protest begin in 1950 and died in 1984. They want to have equal pay, higher education, and want to end the discrimination. Second Wave feminism had two branches, Liberal Feminists and Radical Feminists also Working class women played great role too. Liberal Feminist's objectives were for equality within the existing social structure and also equality with men. However, Radical Feminists objectives were to breakdown of the system of power that sustains mail advantage in every sphere of life, including economics, politics, the family, religion, law, education, science, and medicine, as well as in the interactions of everyday life. Also Radical women are not defined as white, middle class agenda rather social class and ethnicity/race define the issues facing women also. The relationship between the Civil Rights Movement and the feminist agenda of Second wave feminism those women played great role in both. They both of these want to have equal rights, at work, school, and also end the discrimination. Civil Rights Movement and Second Wave of Feminism struggled greatly but they had great success. In conclusion, I would say that Civil Rights Movement and Second Wave of Feminism struggled a lot but after all it was worth it. They had many similarities and women played great roles organizing meetings and interaction with other women that brought unity and that lead them into success.
